ART FIX: Explore Jersey's relationship with the land

Friday 05 April 2024

A new exhibition is inviting islanders to explore their relationship with the land...

Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

The Land & Us | La Tèrre et Nous

An exhibition of newly commissioned artworks exploring our relationship to the land in Jersey was launched last week.

Jersey and UK artists responded to a call to reconnect, prioritise and protect the island's precious natural ecosystem.

The Land & Us was developed by ArtHouse Jersey in collaboration with local artist Alexander Mourant – alongside partner artists, Hannah Fletcher, Remi Graves, Alice Burnhope and Sam Carvosso.

The exhibition is a culmination of a year-long learning programme that took place at ArtHouse Jersey and community centres across the island, working with a diverse cross-section of the population.

The organisers said: "In this family-friendly exhibition you will be guided through artworks exploring Jersey’s past, present and future habitation of the local land, through textiles, poetry, sculpture, installation and photography.

"Travelling from our ancient neolithic past, when the land was a sacred site of ritual, through our farming traditions, oral histories and earthly language of Jèrriais, to our woodlands, indigenous species and pathways that encircle the island, The Land and Us is a place to gather and reflect on the natural world."

The exhibition runs until Sunday 5 May at ArtHouse Jersey's Capital House in St Helier.

Art in the Frame Foundation has launched an exhibition of photography by Marcin Pajak at The Harbour Gallery.

'Fleeting Moments' documents the "changing faces of Jersey", captured in a series of subtle portrayals of the island's atmosphere.

The organisers said: "These photographs are not only images but narratives, telling stories of the ever-changing environment and the enchantment associated with the briefest of moments."

Known under the pseudonym DarkLight Photography, Marcin Pajak is a photographer specialising in event, portrait and product photos with a special interest in landscapes.

The exhibition will run at The Harbour Gallery at Commercial Buildings until 21 April.

Rag Trade

Potty Eco Pots' next 'Rag Trade' event will be held on this Saturday 6 April in St John, with islanders invited to bring along any unwanted clothes and items to be taken home by someone else for free.

Founder Kalina Le Marquand explained that there are "no rules" to the event.

"You can bring along clothes and not take any, or you can take clothes and not bring any with you!" she said.

"An absolutely huge amount of unwanted clothes are thrown into the waste stream every day. This is a way to reuse them."

After the success of the initial clothes-based rag trade, the event now also includes household items, plants, plant pots, food and toiletries.

The event will run from 11:00-15:00 this Saturday at St John Parish Hall.
