National Trust confirms next CEO

Friday 01 March 2024

The National Trust has confirmed who will be taking over as CEO when the incumbent steps down after nearly a quarter-century in the role.

After a 24-year tenure, in which he spearheaded campaigns to save the Plémont headland and restore historic buildings in St Helier, Charles Alluto will be leaving in April.

Following what it described as a "thorough" recruitment process which involved "support" from the International National Trusts Organisation, the Trust confirmed yesterday that current Fundraising Officer Alan Le Maistre was Chief Executive Officer-designate.

He is due to take up the appointment at the Trust's AGM in April 2024.

"We are blessed to live on an island so rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Our island unites us, and we have a shared responsibility to protect it, for the enjoyment of all islanders and for future generations," Mr Le Maistre said.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity afforded to me by the Trust. It is an exciting time for the organisation. We have the chance to build on our past success and to use our lands, buildings, and people to give back so much more to the island. I very much look forward to being part of that journey."

National Trust President Charlie Malet de Carteret commented that the Trust was "confident" that Mr Le Maistre "will build upon the strong foundations which Charles Alluto has established over the last 25 years and take the Trust forward towards its 100th anniversary in 2036."

"The Council and all our staff very much look forward to working with him," he said.

Mr Alluto's departure was announced in December, with the CEO saying that his decision to explore "other opportunities" had come after "careful reflection".

Yesterday, the departing leader described himself as "pleased to be handing the reins over to such a dedicated and committed supporter of the Trust's vision and values."

"Alan has the skills needed to continue developing the Trust's important work in the Island and I wish him every success in the coming years," he added.
