Teenagers make the grade with top GCSE results

Jersey teenagers’ GCSE grades have improved on last year and are still significantly ahead of the UK, according to figures out yesterday.

Hundreds of teenagers have received their grades, and overall stats released by the Education department show an A* to C pass rate of 72.4%, compared to 67.4% last year.

But it will be several weeks until each school has to publish its own results – the results of different schools usually show a big gap between the fee-paying and non fee-paying schools.

Education Minister Pat Ryan has congratulated students and teachers for another set of excellent results.

He said: “The results show Jersey students and schools are performing well. When compared to last year, our school results have improved which is great news. Congratulations go to all the students and teachers who have worked so hard to achieve these results.”

The stats released this morning show that 1,016 students sat GCSE exams.

Preliminary results show that the number of A* to C grades including English and Maths has arisen to 60.3% from 53.6% in 2013.

The school breakdowns will not be out until the Autumn half-term in late October, just after this year’s elections.
