Short-term changes have been made to the opening hours of government-run sports centres due to staff shortages.
Shortages of staff have been caused by staff who have flu symptoms self-isolating, staff with underlying health conditions being sent home for their own protection, and regular winter sickness.
Managers have tried to minimise the impact on customers and tenants, but reduced staffing levels has made it impossible to operate safely in some areas.
The Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture with delegated responsibility for sport, Senator Steve Pallett, said:
“The safety of our customers is paramount, and we are keeping our centres open only when we can guarantee this. This is a fast-moving situation and if there are any further changes we will announce them as soon as possible.
“We encourage the over-65 and vulnerable Islanders who are socially distancing to maintain their health at home and in their gardens. Those socially distancing can still visit parks and the beach, but should avoid close contact with others.”
