Fifth annual leadership survey hopes to be "biggest and most diverse" yet

Tuesday 10 December 2024

The fifth rendition of Leadership Jersey's annual survey has opened – and aims to be the "biggest and most diverse" sample of insights into the state of local workplaces.

Islanders have until Tuesday 31 December to complete the anonymous survey, and £1 is being donated to charity for every person who completes it up to £1,000.

Since launching in 2015, not-for-profit organisation Leadership Jersey, in partnership with All Island Media, the parent company of Express, has held dozens of leadership events and raised over £40,000 for various charities.

The 2023 survey was completed by 480 islanders, and Leadership Jersey is urging more islanders to spare the six minutes the survey takes to share their views.

"When we look at the various disasters in organisations of all types, it is usually easy to tell that poor leadership is more than often the reason that disaster occurred, or at the very least was not mitigated more effectively or promptly," said Kevin Keen, co-founder of Leadership Jersey.

"Why do we do all this? Well, our belief is that better leadership will lead to a better Jersey – an island that is more productive, more sustainable and where Mondays are looked forward to, not dreaded. I accept that they are very ambitious aims, but we like to think big.

"Please help us by completing the survey yourself and asking someone else you know to do the same, it’s quick to do and anonymous.

"We are trying to get the biggest and most diverse sample so far."

2023 Results

  • Bosses rated themselves an average of 7 (out of 10), but when asked to rate their bosses their people gave an average of 6.2
  • Respondents rated overall leadership in their organisation a 6.5 – the highest since the survey started
  • Females were slightly better than males at leadership, but males ranked female bosses a 7.3
  • Although most bosses gave their staff an appraisal, it was very rare that they asked their people what they thought of them as bosses
  • Over a third of respondents had considered leaving their job in the last year because of their boss
  • About two-thirds of respondents received no leadership development
