A demonstration of how to hack a kettle and a walk-through of a recent WhatsApp social engineering attack were among the features of a sell-out Cybersecurity Awareness Month event – and there are more events and workshops this week.
Organised by CERT.JE, the aim of the month-long programme of events is to develop and enhance cyber security awareness in Jersey, supporting individuals and businesses to understand how best to prepare for, protect from and defend against cyber threats.
Kickstarting the month was the Channel Islands Cyber Security Conference, which saw 200 attendees hear from speakers from the UK, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar.
Delegates were given a hands-on demonstration by Ken Munro of Pen Test Partners showing how to hack an internet connected kettle. They heard from Marcus Willett, formerly of GCHQ, how Ukraine had successfully defended against a series of cyber attacks. Meanwhile, Tom Britton of Owlgaze explained how the Channel Islands are subject to some 10 million cyber attacks per month.
CERT.JE director Matt Palmer broke down a recent WhatsApp social engineering attack, and outlined the lessons to be learned from the Europe-wide attack on satellite company ViaSat which took place. two hours before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In addition to the conference, the Awareness Month programme organised by CERT.JE has included talks and workshops on responding to mock cyber incidents.
Explaining the need for the awareness month, CERT.JE Director Matt Palmer said: “Cyber threats are only increasing, and we need to see a step change in how we respond to cyber risk if we are to bring Jersey up to an international standard and protect islanders and businesses from cyber crime and fraud.
“This programme of events for Cyber Security Awareness Month has been developed with input and support from Jersey businesses, community organisations and public service providers.
“We are together determined to create much greater levels of cyber security awareness in Jersey, and to support the development of cyber security skills and a diverse cyber talent pipeline for Jersey.”
