Law firm to offer free information sessions following 'Divorce Day'

Thursday 04 January 2018

A new family law firm is offering free information sessions, as figures show that the number of unhappy husbands and wives consulting lawyers with a view to filing for divorce traditionally increases in this period.

Many couples wait until after Christmas and the New Year before initiating a separation, leading to a glut of inquiries on the first working Monday of January, which has been dubbed ‘Divorce Day’.

Recently-launched Corbett Le Quesne will be offering free, confidential 30-minute sessions in January and February at their West Centre offices in a bid to help during this tricky time. While they won't be charging, a £10 donation is suggested, which will go to charity Brighter Futures.

Advocate Nicholas Le Quesne, who heads the firm with Barbara Corbett, explained: “In January, there is normally a surge in divorce enquiries made to lawyers throughout Britain. We understand that considering divorce or separation is traumatic. Quite apart from the difficult emotions flowing from relationship breakdown, enquirers are concerned about the financial practicalities such as where they will live; child care arrangements and the division of assets. Some need to know the consequences of divorce before perhaps trying to save their marriage.

"Corbett Le Quesne appreciates that January is also a typically a difficult month for many people financially and will therefore be offering free of charge information sessions during January and February. Our lawyers also hope to raise funds for our 2018 chosen charity, Brighter Futures, at the same time, by encouraging donations at the appointments.”

Mr Le Quesne added that the key aim for family lawyers should be to resolve matters as calmly and cost-effectively as possible and that deciding to separate doesn’t have to mean a lengthy divorce process, bitterness or a court battle. “We practice collaborative law, use the Resolution code of conduct and always encourage round-table meetings to settle issues, whether about where children should live or how finances should be divided."
