An experienced skipper and teacher of nearly four decades has been appointed Chair of the Board of Wetwheels Jersey Limited.

David Jones succeeds Brian Watt, who has come to the end of his term after six years.

Mr Jones has recently retired from a 38-year teaching career and has developed his passion for sailing and boating from an early age.

Wetwheels Jersey enables disabled and disadvantaged people to enjoy Jersey’s beautiful maritime environment, offering opportunities that simply would not be available otherwise. As Wetwheels do not charge for trips, but relies on fundraising efforts and donations.

Mr Jones said that he was "delighted" to be taking on the role, adding: “Having grown up sailing on the island, I consider it a privilege to be part of a team that gives islanders with a range of disabilities an opportunity to share in the joy, excitement and exhilaration of being afloat, together with some unforgettable maritime experiences.

“During its first 10 years, Wetwheels Jersey has received a wealth of support from the business sector and individuals across the Island and I am looking forward to working with our team of volunteers, sponsors and supporters to achieve further growth of our on-water activities.”

Mr Jones is a past Commodore of St Catherine’s Sailing Club 2019-2020, and is an experienced yacht racing skipper, having competed in local, national and international events for many years.  He is currently on the Executive and Sailing Committees of St Helier Yacht Club.

Wetwheels Jersey is a registered charity that with the aim of enabling disabled and disadvantaged Islanders to experience Jersey’s amazing maritime environment. Operating a specially constructed and equipped 9.2 metre catamaran, the charity provides maritime experiences for disabled and disadvantaged Islanders and visitors. Wetwheels Jersey is affiliated to the Wetwheels Foundation in the UK.
