A grand day out for Charlene the cow

A Jersey cow enjoyed a very unusual outing at the weekend when she attended a cheese tasting at the Grand Hotel.

The five-star hotel organised a cheese tasting event to celebrate the World Jersey Cheese Awards and Charlene from Darren and Julia Quénault's Classic Herd from Manor Farm in St Peter.

A pop-up farm, complete with wood chippings and hay bales was set up on the hotel's terrace for Charleen to graze on while she enjoyed unrivalled views of St Aubin’s Bay and greeted visitors as they arrived to enjoy the festivities. The event was free but visitors were encouraged to make a donation to the hotel's chosen charity for 2014, Headway.

"The event was a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate our partnership with Classic Herd and to give islanders the chance to try some of the quality and unique products available on our doorstep. It was also a wonderful example of how our Michelin star restaurant uses local produce to compliment and enhance the products from our suppliers," said Eamonn Elliott, General Manager at Grand Jersey.

Grand Jersey’s leading local supplier, Classic Herd, offered a selection of their own local artisan cheeses and Tassili’s Richard Allen produced some luxurious chutney’s and flatbreads to accompany the produce on display. A range of matching wines was also selected from the hotel cellar for people to try with the cheeses.

Visitors were also invited to play a range of Jersey cow themed games, such as "guess the amount of milk produced by Charleen in a year" and "who can tell the best cheese joke?" The winners received vouchers to spend at Tassili restaurant and the Classic Herd Farm Shop.
