Offshore law firm Mourant Ozannes is supporting the Jersey Surfboard Club’s aims to encourage young Islanders to take up the sport.
The firm is sponsoring the club’s surf academy for under-18s which is being launched on 27 April. Surfing, and particularly youth surfing, is very popular among young Islanders from those who just enjoy a surf at the weekend to those who are good enough to compete at national and international levels.
The President of the Jersey Surfboard Club, Dave Ferguson, said: “Over the past ten to 15 years in Jersey we have seen an incredible growth in surfing. We encourage young beginners ‘to try, and give surfing a go’ from across our Island-wide community. Many of our young surfers have, over the years, trained hard to develop their skills and have competed in national, European and worldwide competitions.”
The Jersey Surfboard Club was formed in 1959 and is one of the oldest surf clubs in Europe. It supports junior, senior and professional members who compete in the Channel Islands, UK, European and worldwide competitions. Under-18 surfers account for more than half of annual membership.
Ed Devenport, partner at Mourant Ozannes said, “We are delighted to be working with the Jersey Surfboard Club and supporting their growing Surf Academy. It’s great for us to be involved in surfing, which offers so much to our young Islanders. The sport encourages young surfers to respect the power of the sea, improve their general fitness, learn new skills and embrace competitiveness.”
