New job centre to open at Waterfront?

Thursday 02 January 2014

A new job centre for tradesmen could be set up at the Waterfront as one of the biggest construction projects in Island history begins next year.

The managing director of the States of Jersey Development Company, Lee Henry, said that the new centre could be set up as part of the multi-million pound Jersey International Finance Centre project.

The project is expected to take several years to complete and will provide significant work for the struggling construction industry as well as world-class new offices for the finance sector.

In an exclusive interview in this month’s edition of Connect magazine, Mr Henry said that work on the first of six brand new modern office buildings on the Esplanade car park site could start in the Spring.

And he said that there would be plenty of opportunities for local contractors over the course of the project.

Mr Henry said: ‘We’re lining everything up to start on site back end of (the) first quarter, early second quarter of next year.

‘We’ve recently appointed a joint venture comprising Camerons and Sir Robert McAlpine Limited as the main contractor for the project.  For us it was important to appoint a local main contractor and Camerons are absolutely committed to ensuring as many local businesses and workers are involved in the project as possible.

‘The other element that the contractor is interested in pursuing is working with Social Security and possibly having an on-site job centre whereby people will be able to understand what skills are going to be needed and when; and then to have a point of contact. These are all ideas that have come from Camerons to very much focus on local economic stimulus as this is a major project for the Island.’
