Next generation mobile technology moves closer with Sure agreement

Tuesday 28 January 2014

Sure has announced plans for a new high-speed 4G mobile network in Jersey - if they get the nod from the regulator.

The company says that Jersey could see the introduction of a full 4G mobile network - which allows much faster data and video streaming to mobile devices - this year, subject to regulatory agreement by the Channel Islands Competition Regulatory Authority, and from Ofcom. A pre-contract agreement with Huawei to build 4G networks in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man has been announced by the company, which is owned by the Bahraini Batelco Group. They say a full contract will be in place no later than 28th February..

The company is one of three providing mobile phones in Jersey, along with publicly-owned JT and Airtel-Vodafone.

Sure Chief Executive Eddie Saints said: "We want to make sure that our islands are at the forefront of communications technology and ensuring we have a network that delivers 4G/LTE speeds, coverage and resilience is core to that. As we roll out the new network throughout this year, our customers will notice a significant improvement in their mobile voice and wireless data experience, which we know will be welcomed.

"In addition, this multi-million pound investment into our infrastructures underpins our commitment to the Channel Islands to ensure their position as key players in the world markets."

Cyrille Joffre, CTIO Sure, added: "Huawei is a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, with the technical expertise and experience to implement a cutting edge communications solution in our islands. Their proven track record in delivering 4G/LTE solutions across the world is reassuring as we enter into a project of this scale."
