Social media guidance for finance firms to be explored at CIPR event

Thursday 28 May 2015

The recently published Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) guidelines on financial promotions in social media will be the focus of an event being organised in Guernsey and Jersey by the Channel Islands group of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

The events will look at what the guidelines means for the growing number of financial services firms using social media, assess the challenges and opportunities they highlight, examine how the guidance could evolve and explore what this means for finance firms in the Channel Islands.

The sessions, which will be held on 18 June in Jersey and 19 June in Guernsey, will be led by Mike Gould, Retail Markets Specialist at The Investment Association, the trade association for the UK’s £5 trillion investment management industry.

Prior to joining The Investment Association, Mike held a number of senior compliance roles at London-based investment management firms following 12 years at the UK’s Financial Services Authority and its predecessor the Securities and Investments Board.

Mike has taken a lead on the FCA's social media guidance on behalf of the Investment Association since its publication in March.

Adam Riddell, Chair of the CIPR Channel Islands group, said: “More and more banks, law, professional services and advisory firms in Guernsey and Jersey are using various social media platforms for a whole range of reasons and this trend is only going one way. The FCA guidelines, which have been under consultation in the UK for some time, are essentially quite pragmatic, sensible and useful generally in terms of effective promotion through social media, and we would certainly encourage firms to acquaint themselves with them and understand how they can be applied in a local context.

“This talk with Mike Gould, who is an expert in this area, will be a valuable session for professionals in the islands, particularly with both Jersey and Guernsey keen to position themselves as leaders in the digital and financial services space.”

The ‘Decoding the FCA Social Media Guidance’ events will take place in Jersey on Thursday 18 June from 12 to 2pm at the Digital Jersey Hub in St Helier, and in Guernsey on Friday 19 June from 9 to 11am at the Duke of Richmond Hotel. Places cost £15 for CIPR Members and £20 for non-CIPR Members.
