The States of Jersey Development Company's plans to overhaul the Waterfront and Jardins de la Mer area have been shortlisted in the ‘Future Place’ category of The Pineapples awards.
The Pineapples awards were set up by built environment industry publication, The Developer, to celebrate the very best in placemaking.
Nominated entries must be a mixed-use development or cluster of developments that create a neighbourhood, large or small. It may be a wholly new place or a redevelopment.
The award categories include community engagement, activation, active travel, public space, creative retrofit, future place, place in progress and place of the year.
The Southwest St Helier Visioning Framework, which was created by the JDC in partnership with architects Gillespies, has been shortlisted in the ‘Future Place’ category, which seeks to recognise a masterplan, planning application, action plan or design proposal for a place, whether in development or theoretical.

The judges of this category will be looking for a future place that seeks to foster community, welcome visitors and attract tenants, contribute to urban life, and encourage people to dwell, live, work, connect, learn or play.
The JDC says its Framework is a 11.5-hectare, landscape-led, mixed-use development with up to 1,000 new homes, which aims address the existing disconnect between the Waterfront and town centre.
More than half of the site area is designated to public spaces - including an enhanced Waterfront Promenade and a re-imagined Les Jardins de la Mer - and the develop is aiming to achieve ‘The Urban Greening Factor’ target of 0.4, which is regarded as an international best practice guide for facilitating sustainable developments.

The Outline Planning Application for the development, which is expected to cost the JDC £150m, was submitted in December 2021 and a Public Inquiry is expected to take place towards the end of this year.
All of The Pineapples’ shortlisted projects will have the chance to present their scheme to the judging panel and a live audience comprising industry professionals from local government, developers, investors and architects during the ‘Festival of Place: The Pineapples’, a major, week-long digital event that takes place 23-27 May.
Winners will be revealed at an awards party on 6 July.
