Is your boss a 'manager' or a 'leader'? A survey is aiming to establish just that, as well as the key qualities of leadership, office culture and job satisfaction according to those working in Jersey.

Now in its fourth year, the survey is being run by Leadership Jersey, and takes just six minutes to complete.

For every survey completed, £1 will be donated to social enterprise Beresford Street Kitchen, which gives working opportunities to islanders with learning disabilities.

Set up by Kevin Keen in 2015, Leadership Jersey aims to raise awareness of leadership as an essential quality, and is partnered with Bailiwick Express's parent company All Island Media and Law at Work. 

Having worked in various Jersey organisations over the course of his career, from businesses to charities and even government, Mr Keen has gained valuable insights into what makes some organisations succeed while others fail.

While disruptive technology, changing consumer habits, and economic circumstances can certainly disrupt operations, a good leader can anticipate these challenges and make the necessary changes to navigate them effectively. They prioritise the organisation's success over their own interests, even if that means stepping aside.

The covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of leadership across sectors, from politics and business to charities and voluntary organisations.

What did last year's results show?

The survey draws a distinction between those who are bosses, and those who show the qualities of a leader.

The 2022 edition of the survey received 638 responses, and of these, 76% said they 'reported to someone'. Those who didn't report to anyone were just asked to rate themselves as a leader.

92% of respondents said they would prefer to work for a leader, rather than a manager.

Overall, those who reported to a male boss rated the lowest (38% 'leaders'), and those who reported to a female boss rated the highest (49% 'leaders').

Additionally, when asking if your CEO is more of a manager, or a leader, a big change between 2021 and 2022 was that female respondents with a female boss rated their CEO's leadership the highest, with 67% believing their CEO were leaders. Whereas, last year, female respondents with a female boss rated the lowest, believing their CEO's were only 48% leaders.

The survey also looked at job satisfaction, with respondents rating the top three elements as 'Work-life balance and flexible working' (66%), 'leadership that inspires me' (51%) and salary and benefits (49%). However, interestingly, ‘company culture’ increased by +9%.

Another increase is that 67% of respondents had received a performance appraisal in the last 12 months, which was 10% more than the previous year.
