Jersey-based technology company Taxteq has appointed an award-winning writer, who filed the UK's first electronic personal tax return in 1997, as Senior Advisor.
Paul Aplin OBE was President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 2018/19, and currently sits on its Tax Faculty Board.
He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Council, the Tax Technology Committee of CFE Tax Advisers Europe, the Editorial Board of Tax Journal, HMRC’s Administrative Burdens Advisory Board and the Board of the Office of Tax Simplification.
In 2009, he was appointed OBE for services to the accountancy profession. Four years later, he secured the Outstanding Industry Contribution Award in the British Accountancy Awards, then last year was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in the 2021 Taxation Awards.
On his new role, Mr Aplin said: “I’m delighted to be working with Taxteq as their Senior Advisor.
"Their technology captured my interest because it offers solutions to a number of situations I have encountered in professional practice, from finding a key piece of information in a swamp of documentation to being able to date-stamp, save and share documentation in a completely secure environment.
"I am always on the lookout for technology that offers genuine solutions to practical problems. My immediate reaction to seeing a demonstration of the Taxteq platform was to think back over cases where it could have saved me significant amounts of valuable time and others where it could have avoided a great deal of frustration."
Co-founder of Taxteq Harry Boxall said Mr Aplin's "depth of experience, clarity of thought and understanding of the application of technology in day-to-day and more complex matters" would be "hugely valuable" to the company.
Co-founder Tim Huelin added that his knowledge and experience "will help us shape our technology platform".
