Trackers launches new apprenticeship for hospitality managers of the future

Wednesday 02 April 2014

Young people with career ambitions to be Jersey’s future hotel and restaurant managers will be able to start training this September through a new Trackers apprentice programme.

The four-year programme – a partnership between the Jersey Hospitality Association and Highlands College - leads to a recognised qualification in hospitality management. After the first year in college, the apprentices will be based in workplaces in Jersey, with the potential for placements abroad through industry partners in order to broaden their experience.

Eileen Buicke-Kelly, the Curriculum and Catering Manager in the Academy of Culinary Arts at Highlands College said: “This is an exciting new venture for training in the hospitality industries and will allow apprentices to experience a variety of roles on their journey to management. Highlands have worked closely with Trackers, the industry and the JHA to develop a programme that combines education, training and skills development and leads to a Level 4 Diploma in Principles of Hospitality Management.”

The Chief Executive of the Jersey Hospitality Association, Gerald Fletcher, said: “There is a unanimous feeling among members that there is an urgent need to establish an apprenticeship programme for the hospitality industry in Jersey. This scheme will primarily suit those who are committed to a career in the sector and, more importantly, who aspire to a junior managerial role. This is excellent news for the industry and there has been a great deal of commitment from all involved to bring this to fruition.”

Any 16 to18 year-olds interested in applying can find the initial application forms online at www.gov.je/trackers and can contact the Trackers team on 449180 or email trackers@gov.je
