As part of its continued efforts to look after the local environment, Butterfield has signed up as a Plastic Free Jersey business and will be sponsoring the organisation’s ‘Design Sprint’, which is part of a series of events taking place on Thursday, 6 December at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Plastic Free Jersey is an initiative that brings together invidviduals, groups, businesses and organisations to reduce the amount of single-use plastic used on-island. It has been working hard to meet the objectives set by Surfers Against Sewage to certify the Island as a Plastic Free Community.

To become a Plastic Free Jersey business, Butterfield introduced four action points earlier this month which included giving all staff a branded ‘keep-cup’, a reusable water bottle and a hessian sandwich bag, as well as replacing individual desk bins with recycling bins in the kitchen.

Butterfield is also supporting Plastic Free Jersey’s Design Sprint on 6 December. The event is inspired by the sprint process at Google using global design company, IDEO’s framework of Design Thinking, which is a creative approach to problem solving that starts with people’s ideas and ends with innovative, tailor-made solutions.

Taking part in the Design Sprint are 30 GCSE and A-Level students from local schools who will be introduced to three challenges around plastic pollution that the Island is currently facing. It’s then up to the students to come up with innovative solutions for the challenges through the Design Thinking process of inspiration, ideation and implementation. Mentors from local businesses, as well as facilitators from the Plastic Free Jersey team will be on hand to guide the students through the process.

Noel McLaughlin, Chief Operating Officer at Butterfield Bank (Jersey) Limited, said: ‘We are delighted to support the Design Sprint hosted by Plastic Free Jersey, which is an innovative and creative way of addressing and coming up with solutions to the global problem of plastic pollution. At Butterfield, we areconsciously trying to do our bit for the environment in the communities we call home. We hope that by implementing these small changes across the business, it will make a big difference in reducing the use of single-use plastic in the Island.’

Linzi Hawkin, Co-Founder of Plastic Free Jersey, said: ‘We’re very excited to bring everyone together to celebrate Jersey’s certification as a Plastic Free Community. We’ve been overwhelmed with the support we’ve had from Islanders and the momentum that has grown around the single-use plastic issue. We’d like to thank Butterfield for its support as a Plastic Free Jersey business and for sponsoring our Design Sprint, which is set to be an exciting and thought-provoking event that we hope will inspire solutions to plastic pollution.’
