C5 Alliance Group’s Marc Lainé has expressed a hope that a tech business incubator initiative launched recently by the company will be a useful precursor to the Commerce and Employment Department’s plans for a digital start-up incubator in St Peter Port.
C5 Alliance Group’s incubator service offers the use of existing facilities at Itex House, along with various support services, to encourage entrepreneurs and start-ups in the island.
“There is anecdotal evidence that the lack of facilities is holding back our digital opportunities,” said Mr Lainé.
“Our exercise is a proof of concept; we’ve got government talking at the moment about converting the post office [into an incubator for start-ups]. If we can prove that there is a demand, government may have a stronger case for additional funding.”
While this type of initiative is important for the digital sector, Mr Lainé said it would benefit the island as a whole.
“Our social and economic well-being is dependent on increasing our digital skills and our skills in the workforce and providing digital employment.
“These digital companies can perform a role in Guernsey but export their intellectual property internationally. It’s really about keeping us economically and socially successful,” he said.
