To celebrate the first 12 months of their CSR #cando staff challenge, Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management (CGWM) has announced their support towards ten elite athletes as they prepare for the next Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo 2020, in collaboration with UK-based TeamedUp. Over the past year, staff from CGWM’s 12 UK and offshore offices have logged 125,166 miles - more than five times round the world – by taking part in various sports in their efforts to get active and support up and coming athletes who reflect their #cando ethos.

#cando is the philosophy that drives CGWM’s CSR activities and sponsorships. The staff challenge was introduced to help reinforce a #cando attitudeand recognise the benefits of an active lifestyle on mental and physical performance.More than 20% of staff signed up to take part in the challenge and logged miles from activities including walking, running, swimming, cycling, power walking, netball, spinning and football. Although very much an individual challenge to become more active, the top three participants recording the highest number of miles were Stephen Proutwith 3,416 miles, Julie Sebirewith 3,063 miles and Ross Cowdrey with 2,968 miles all from the Guernsey office.

David Esfandi, Chief Executive Officer, Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, said, “#cando has been so successful in helping us consistently promote and support the benefits of an active lifestyle.  Just ten minutes of daily exercise can make a huge difference in day-to-day life and work productivity. 2018 was a great start and we look forward to seeing an even larger participation in 2019 with more staff taking up the challenge.

And to strengthen our support to the community, we’re delighted to announce our partnership with TeamedUpwho work with elite athletes across all Olympic and Paralympic sports. The athletes they support are inspiring and so many of them reflect our #cando ethos perfectly.”

Commenting further, Dominic John, Founder of TeamedUpand Olympic Torch Bearersaid, “Sports has a way of bringing people together and building a strong sense of community, discipline and respect. It is an exciting time for us to work with Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management in their ongoing efforts to encourage an active lifestyle. We are very thankful for their generous support of our athletes to help them on their path to success.”In addition to a financial donation, CGWM will be working closely with three athletes on staff events in 2019 to inspire and encourage more #cando activities.

Richard Chiassarois a top-ranking Paralympic athlete in wheelchair racing competing mainly in sprint and middle-distance events. Amongst the many accolades he has won, his biggest achievement in sport is getting selected for the Rio Games 2016. Richard also volunteers and coaches wheelchair racing to disabled children and adults along with ex-wounded soldiers.

David Smith, a multi-medallist in Boccia, is areigning European, World and Paralympic Champion with more than 12 years' experience in elite international sports. Talent, hard work and a strong desire have resulted in many awards throughout his sporting career.

Luke Sinnott is a retired Captain from the armed forces who lost both his legs above the knee. His incredible inner strength helped him to overcome a number of hurdles and he is now a performance athlete and international long jumper. He is training full time for the Paralympics and will be using the donation amount to purchase a Kaiser machine. Luke commented, “It’s great to partner with CGWM, who promote the importance of having a #cando attitude. There’s always equipment I need to purchase and that is how CGWM are helping me. I will be using the money to purchase some new weights for deadlifting and I’ve also been saving up for a Keiser machine (a resistance machine). Both of these purchases will help to boost and maximise my training.”

Dominic John added, “There are many lessons that a business can learn from the world of sport and I hope that working with TeamedUp athletes in 2019 will inspire Canaccord staff to achieve even greater things in 2019.”
