Business leaders, investors and entrepreneurs can learn a great deal from the success of family-run businesses, says Barclays.

The bank is hosting an event, The Exchange, to discover what makes family-run businesses tick, and how investors and entrepreneurs can emulate their success.

According to Harvard Business School, family businesses account for two thirds of businesses around the world, and in the US about a third of the S&P 500’s firms are family-controlled. The event will explore why family-run businesses are so successful and what investors and other business professionals can learn from them.

The Exchange, now in its second year, is a thought leadership panel event organised by Barclays featuring experts from the world of business and finance.

Remi Krug, former president of Krug Champagne, and Peter Lamble, chairman of Start-rite Shoes, will be joined by Barclays’ London-based experts Henk Potts, director of global research and investments, and Nick Gordon, head of specialist solutions, together with local leadership to debate the secrets behind some of the world’s leading family-run businesses.

The debate will be moderated by distinguished financial journalist and former host of Sky News’ breakfast programme, Sunrise, Emma Crosby. The panel will explore how family-run businesses differ from public companies, why they invest where others retreat, and how they succeed in today’s tough markets. Remi and Peter will share their exclusive insights, knowledge and first hand experiences of running a family business and explain why their structure gives them a competitive advantage.

Paul Savery, managing director at Barclays in Jersey, said: “The Exchange is a great opportunity for local business owners, family offices and investors to hear from those who have demonstrated an understanding as to what makes family-run businesses so successful.

“The debate will also offer recommendations and insights from Barclays’ investment experts, Henk and Nick, into trading strategies for businesses and their investors.”

The Exchange will take place in Jersey on the evening of Wednesday 16 November and in Guernsey on Thursday 17 November. Places are limited and you can register your interest online at wealth.barclays.com/theexchange.
