Every year through the summer months, Colin Shales bides his time sitting at the foot of St. Catherine’s Breakwater, selling scallop shells and manning the collection box to raise funds for the RNLI.

And every year, on a Sunday morning towards the end of the summer season, the crew of St. Catherine’s lifeboat station and the RNLI Guild gather at the boathouse to count the takings so that they can be banked.

Whilst 2020 was somewhat underwhelming from a fund-raising point of view, quite understandably given the lockdowns which we all suffered, 2021 has been altogether more buoyant. As counting was not able to take place last year, we have rolled the two years together and so the total collected for 2020-2021 reached a staggering £4,059.41.

This brings the total amount raised by Colin and his late wife, Lillian, for RNLI Jersey to over £36,000.
