The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is just completing the resurfacing of a section of the pedestrian and cycle path in St Peter’s near the airport.

Cyclists and pedestrians are now able to benefit from a smoother surface on the section of pathway that runs from Rue des Landes through to Rue Carree. The original hoggin surface was used because the path runs through a semi-rural area and at the time was thought to be more in keeping with the nearby environment. However, DfI received a significant amount of feedback from users who felt the surface was not conducive to cycling. DfI has listened to the comments and has resurfaced the path with brown tarmac, which merges with the environment but provides a smooth riding surface. In particular, the works have addressed the very rough surface caused by water erosion on the steep parts of the path approaching the airport, as these were causing ongoing maintenance issues for the Department. DfI will continue to resurface other sections of the path when budgets allow.

This is the fourth pedestrian and cycle path project the Department has undertaken this year, St Peter’s Valley path, the English Harbour link and Le Hocq to Le Rocquier being the other three. This underlines the Department’s commitment to providing the Island with infrastructure that enables a healthy lifestyle and alternatives to car travel.

Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for Infrastructure, said “We just managed to find enough budget this year to undertake this section of pathway resurfacing. I know cyclists will find using this route much easier now and I hope it will encourage new users. It will also be easier for pedestrians with wheeled suitcases. The path provides a great off-road link between St Peter’s and St Brelades and is particularly useful for those travelling to Les Quennevais School.”
