The Jersey Memory Box is a reminiscence app and contains images of objects from the Jersey Heritage collections as well as photographs from the Jersey Evening Post archive. It can be used by family members and carers to stimulate memories and start conversations.

It is designed to be used on tablets and is free to download from the App Store and the Play Store. Users can navigate their way through the app using either a theme such as School, Farming or the Occupation, or by a decade between the 1930s and 1980s.

There are 240 images in total and each one has accompanying information to explain what it is showing and to give some context. The images range from a 1935 photograph of the Forum Cinema, to an image of a tin of powdered milk from WWII, a 1970s copy of The Dandy comic and a photograph of Adam Ant arriving in Jersey for his sell-out concert at Fort Regent in 1981.

Lucy Layton, Jersey Heritage’s outreach curator, said: “One of our main aims at Jersey Heritage is to promote access to our rich and varied history. The Jersey Memory Box app is a great example of how modern technology can help us to achieve this and enable people to reconnect with their past.

“Feedback from early users of the app has been really positive and, although it was designed primarily for people living with dementia, it is proving popular with younger users, who are enjoying sharing the memories of parents and grandparents.”

Jersey Memory Box was developed in partnership with the Jersey Alzheimer’s Association and the charity’s educator Michala Graham said: “We see many benefits of this app, both forthose living with dementia and their family, friends and carers. It celebrates the uniqueness of Island life, recognises the rich history of its past and provides an opportunity for imagesand stories to be shared, thereby enhancing the wellbeing of all those affected by dementia.”

The development of the app was supported by the Channel Islands Lottery and the Association of Jersey Charities.
