The winning runners of the inaugural Hospice 2 Hospice half marathon were congratulated on Wednesday night at an awards ceremony which celebrated over £20,000 being raised for Jersey Hospice Care.

The run, which took place at the end of October with over 200 participants, was a highly anticipated event for all those involved having been postponed almost two years due to COVID-19 Government guidelines, making for an extra special evening.

The evening opened with a short welcome and thanks to the runners and volunteers from event organiser, Loraine Fulton, before proceeding with 27 awards for runners in nine categories. Loraine is the Volunteer Manager at Jersey Hospice Care and was inspired to organise the fundraiser in her own time from seeing the impact of the care Hospice provides day in and day out. Hospice 2 Hospice exceeded her initial target of raising £5,000 for the charity, and the £20,000 raised through generous sponsorship will go directly towards caring for patients at Hospice, and supporting their family and friends.

Loraine, said: “I can’t explain how emotional it was to see the event take place. After nearly two years of delaying the run, it was brilliant to hear fantastic feedback from the spectators and the runners, but more important than anything, to know that together you have contributed to the funds of such an amazing charity.”

The Hospice 2 Hospice half marathon started at the charity’s fundraising shop in St Ouen and looped around the stunning country lanes nearby before heading through St John to the finish at Hospice, Mont Cochon. Loraine is grateful to The Tamariki Club, an after school and holiday club, for sponsoring the event.

One of the half marathon runners, Amanda, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the half marathon, it was a fantastic scenic route and the community atmosphere was lovely! The tea, coffee and biscuits at the end were also a bonus!”

The next Hospice 2 Hospice half marathon is scheduled for 20 March 2022, the time of year the event was originally due to take place. A keen runner herself, Loraine hopes this date will give an achievable time frame for those who wish to tackle their first long-distance running event. Registration will soon be available online at www.jerseyhospicecare.com/events.
