A student exchange programme between Jersey and the US has been taking place this month.
Students from Oregon arrived in Jersey on 7 September, and Year 13 Hautlieu School students left for Baker City on Saturday 10 September.
Both students are spending a month studying at their exchange school. Year 13 students from Hautlieu School are studying at Oregon International School, while students from Oregon study in Jersey at the same time. Teachers from both schools have accompanied the students on the programme.
The exchange allows students to continue their education uninterrupted, while also experiencing a new culture. While in Jersey, Oregon students are studying Hautlieu’s International Baccalaureate programme, visiting Jersey’s abundance of Jersey Heritage Sites, camping at the Crabbe Centre, as well as venturing to France to see the Normandy landing beaches.
Meanwhile, Jersey students visiting Oregon are participating in a range of new sports such as American Football, hiking, camping, mountain biking, and rafting in the wildness of the Oregon mountains. They are also visiting local universities and studying with their new friends on the Advanced Placement curriculum (a pre-university course).
Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said: “I’d like to thank all the staff – both at Hautlieu and at Baker International School – for making this exchange possible.
“They are giving students the opportunity to learn more about a different culture by experiencing it first-hand. This is a wonderful gift, and I hope that both Oregon and Jersey students are finding it a valuable experience.”
Nick Falle, Headteacher of Hautlieu School, said: “We strive to develop international mindedness in our community and working and playing with our new Oregon friends is an excellent way to gain an appreciation of new culture. I would like to thank our colleagues at Oregon International School for their warm welcome as well as to the external relations team at the Government of Jersey for helping to develop this school partnership. I would also like to thank Deloitte, long term supporters of our International Baccalaureate qualifications, for kindly hosting a welcome afternoon for our guests on arrival.”
