Jersey Development Company (JDC) has donated two electric vehicle (EV) fire blankets to Jersey Fire and Rescue to help extinguish electrical vehicle fires quickly and safely. JDC administers hundreds of parking spaces in and around St Helier’s Waterfront and many of those spaces are located in underground basements and the Waterfront car park.
The ferocity and high temperatures of EV fire incidents often make conventional firefighting methods ineffective in extinguishing EV fires posing new challenges for firefighters responding to EV fire incidents. After extensive research and development, EV Vehicle Fire Blankets have been specifically designed to manage electric or hybrid vehicle fires by depriving the fire of oxygen, limiting combustion, leading to a rapid reduction in temperatures and minimising potential damage to nearby vehicles and property.
Whilst EV fires are not common, the difficulty in extinguishing lithium batteries underscores the need for effective solutions. The EV vehicle fire isolator blanket efficiently controls the fire, smoke, and toxic fumes allowing fire fighters to isolate the flames within minutes.
Lee Henry, CEO of Jersey Development Company said: “Considering that JDC has constructed basement car parks within its developments and operates the Waterfront public car park, there is a commitment by JDC to minimise fire-related risks while aligning with the GoJ’s sustainable transport policy. The objective extends to minimising potential spread and damage to safeguard car park structures. While the deployment of fire-resistant blankets necessitates at least two trained individuals, given the prioritised response of the fire service, we are delighted to have procured two large reusable EV vehicle fire blankets to Jersey Fire and Rescue. This donation aims to strengthen their firefighting capabilities and support their invaluable service within our community”.
Mark Bailey-Walker, Station Commander, Fire Safety – Prevention said “Jersey Fire and Rescue are required to respond to a wide variety of fire incidents and this includes fires involving Electric Vehicles, we would like to thank the JDC for their proactive response in recognising the potential dangers associated with EV fires within their properties, and for the provision of these specialised pieces of firefighting equipment specifically designed to reduce the intensity and spread of fire from one vehicle to many; any equipment provided that can help reduce the risk to our Firefighters whilst carrying out their duties is greatly appreciated.”
