The Housing Department’s announcement of their capital spend priorities next year has been welcomed by the Construction Industry’s representative body. The Department’s commitment to procuring contractors from local suppliers will mean both security for current Jersey businesses and also help them plan for future growth, says the Jersey Construction Council.
Martin Holmes, Chairman of the JeCC, commenting on the Housing Department’s announcement, said: ‘This is a very encouraging statement from Government. At a time when our industry is struggling to maintain a skilled workforce, in the face of a limited number of tender opportunities, this kind of long-term commitment to local firms is very positive.
‘In addition to securing jobs and aiding future planning it will also help Jersey construction increase the number of training opportunities that they are able to make available to the local employment market.’
The Housing Department intends to go out to tender to the local construction industry on at least five projects in 2014, with a cumulative contract value in excess of £22m.

The Minister for Treasury and Resources has proposed issuing a £250 million public rated bond for affordable housing to fund the capital projects.
