Standard Bank welcomed celebrity chef John Torode at Highlands College on Tuesday as he delivered a masterclass in cooking to students and corporate guests of the Bank.

Students of the College were able to observe John prepare two signature dishes, learning butchery skills and some tricks of the trade before asking him questions about his career and his views on the future of the culinary profession. Their observation skills were later put to the test as they joined staff of Standard Bank and their guests in recreating the dishes as part of the evening’s event.

This is John’s sixth trip to the Island as part of a commitment to what he views as his time to give back to the next generation of chefs. His demonstration was aimed at encouraging budding chefs to find their love in food, stripping cooking back to the simple basics and to build memorable narratives out of delicious meals.

John Torode is the second celebrity chef that Standard Bank have welcomed to the Academy Restaurant at Highland’s College, following a visit by Michel Roux Jr in 2015.

Martyn Samphier, Head of Corporate and Business Banking at Standard Bank, said: “As a bank we are keen to support the next generation of local talent and exposing them to the teachings of one of Britain’s best chefs was a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity. The whole event was a great way to celebrate the best of Jersey, through our food, our student chefs and the excellent programme on offer at Highlands College.”

Eileen Buicke-Kelly, Director of the Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality studies at Highlands College, said: “John’s passion for what he does really came across and he was such an inspiration to all the students. We are very grateful to Standard Bank for this opportunity to learn from such an experienced chef, but also to be able to demonstrate our culinary skills to a wider audience.”
