No-one likes buckets-full of plastic littering our beaches and endangering our sea life so L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa is encouraging guests to bring the rubbish back to them on World Oceans Day, this Friday.
The AA Four Red Star hotel in St Brelade is handing out buckets and asking people to fill them with any litter they find on the beach.
In return they will be treating all the children who fill one to an ice cream and all the grown-ups to a G&T flavoured ice lolly.
World Oceans Day is a global event celebrated on 8th June each year which was first proposed at the Earth Summit back in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC).
Shaun McGachan, Hotel Manager at L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa said, “We are all aware of the devastating effects plastic pollution has on our marine life and World Oceans Day is the perfect opportunity to take community action to help conserve the ocean.
“We are so fortunate to overlook one of the most beautiful beaches in Jersey and we feel it’s our responsibility to ensure it stays this way for generations to come. I’m sure our guests will agree and we hope they will enjoy their ice creams and lollies, our gift to them for their efforts.”
Last year more than 1,000 events were held in 118 countries to mark World Oceans Day and encourage solutions to plastic pollution and preventing littering in our seas.
