Last week Jersey Hospice Care launched their biggest fundraiser of the year, the Million Pound Lottery, and the team are delighted by the support from over 1,000 Islanders who have already bought their ticket. A record-breaking 1630 tickets were sold in the first week of ticket sales, with 700 sold on the first day.
The Lottery is Hospice’s single biggest annual fundraising event, raising £800,000 a year for the charity, while also giving back £1,300,000 in prizes to the community. This fundraising initiative is essential in ensuring that Hospice can continue to provide specialist end of life care, free of charge, 365 days a year. The 700 tickets sold in the first day raised £210,000, which is enough to fund ten days’ of care at Hospice and in the community, to adults and children. Hospice ensures that each person receives personalised care, where they want to receive it, to help them live life to the full and make the most of precious time left.
The Lottery not only ensures Hospice can continue to provide these vital services, but also provides prizes to ten lucky winners who have the chance of winning £1,000,000, £100,000, £75,000, £50,0000, £25,000 and five prizes of £10,000. Previous prize winners have shared that these prizes have changed their lives and their delight in supporting such a well-loved charity.
Last year, Islanders supported the bold and essential move to online ticket sales in response to COVID- 19 Government lockdown. The support for online ticket purchases has continued, with many of those who bought a ticket in 2020 buying their tickets in the first week. As a result, the team at Hospice are expecting tickets to sell out faster than in previous years.
Jersey Hospice Care’s Events and Lotteries Officer, Scott Douglas, said: “With online and in-person ticket sales available, we have seen a staggering number of tickets sold in our first week. We are so grateful for this support and I wouldn’t be surprised if we sell out quicker than in previous years. With just 7,000 tickets available the odds of ticket holders winning the £1,000,000 prize or one of the nine other runner- up prizes is significantly higher than most lotteries, but this does mean there is a limited number and they will sell out!
Volunteer, Elaine Sutcliffe, who is one of the army of volunteers selling tickets at de Gruchy’s and the Hospice shop in St Ouen, said: “It is really great to have the mix of in-person and online sales this year, while many people clearly appreciate the convenience of buying them online we are also delighted to see many of our supporters at de Gruchy’s and to thank them in person for their generosity and support.”
Tickets are on sale for £300 each and available to by online at mpl.jerseyhospicecare.com or in person at de Gruchy in town (on the first floor by the Infusion Café) and from the Hospice fundraising shop in St Ouen. Supporters are kindly reminded that tickets are available by card payment only. In addition to the chance of winning the coveted £1,000,000 prize, everyone who buys a ticket before 6pm on 30 June is also automatically entered into the ‘Early Bird’ draw to win a £1,000 de Gruchy’s gift card, kindly donated by de Gruchy.
