Today is Cyber Monday, the biggest internet shopping day of the year, and a new survey shows that nearly 29% of Jersey shoppers will be buying more than half of their Christmas gifts online this year; with more than a quarter increasing the share of their Christmas purchases they make online.
The survey was commissioned by Mypad.je, the local online furniture retailer. 247 islanders over the age of 18 were surveyed over the past week. The 247 were chosen at random in the street by an independent market researcher, but their age and gender is representative of the general Jersey population.
Paul Clark, MD of Mypad.je said: 'Our current Jersey retail sales figures do not reflect this large online spend, almost all of which is currently leaving our island economy. With more than a quarter of the population spending over half of their non-food shopping online this year, and a rising trend to increase this level of spend, it's clear that the challenges facing the high street in Jersey are not going away, but increasing. Opening on a Sunday isn’t the answer to this issue, people clearly have an appetite for online shopping and Jersey retailers need to consider their online presence as well as their bricks and mortar shop.'
Jersey’s retail sales figures, due out on Wednesday, do not include any internet sales.
Those surveyed were also asked what percentage of their total shopping (non-food items) they have been making online throughout the year. More than a third said they have bought more online this year than last, with more than a quarter saying they use the internet for over half of their shopping.
More than a quarter (nearly 28%) of Jersey people have spent more than half (50%) of their non-food shopping online this year.
