The Jersey Data Protection Association – formed last year in response to the increasing amount of data regulation facing businesses in the Island – will hold its inaugural event this Thursday (22 Feb).
The seminar, which will take place at the Pomme d’Or from 8.30 am until 10 am, will focus on Data Mapping and Registration and will be led by David Carney, a Director at PwC and Chairman of the JDPA.
Mr Carney said: “The JDPA was formed to help organisations, from large to small, to understand, respond and comply with the ever-increasing demands of customers, employees, suppliers and regulators in the field of data privacy and protection.
“The need for awareness in this field has never been greater, with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation in May. This regulation will impact any entity that controls or processes the personal data of European citizens. Jersey has now enacted equivalent legislation in line with the GDPR to ensure that the Island maintains its ‘adequacy status’. The Data Protection (Jersey ) Law 2018 and the Data Protection Authority (Jersey) Law 2018 will come into force on 25 May 2018 – the same day as the GDPR.
“It is critical that our data protection legislation, and our levels of understanding and compliance remain appropriate to ensure Jersey remains competitive against other jurisdictions, while providing increased levels of data protection to individuals.
“Thursday’s seminar will focus on information held by organisations. The GDPR requires organisations to maintain records of all processing activities in relation to personal data and the legal bases for processing such data and it is important for organisations to review the data they have, where it came from, how long they have had it and the legal basis for processing. I urge people with any responsibility for controlling or processing data to attend.”
