Showing appreciation goes a long way – even in the workplace!
Often the best advice is the simplest advice, it’s common knowledge that appreciation is one of life’s greatest motivators, and taking time to let people know that you value them in all areas of life, including the workplace, will promote positivity and good feeling - ultimately motivating your employees to do more.
In the same way that it’s important to take time to look after your own well-being and to be kind to yourself, especially during these unpredictable times, it’s also important to remember those around us too, including work colleagues. Kindness does not cost anything, but the benefits of feeling appreciated and valued go a long way in supporting the well-being of others.
While a ‘pat on the back’ doesn’t pay the bills, new research on gratitude practices shows that promoting considerate behaviour across an organisation and encouraging leaders / managers to express thanks and appreciation to their staff is really effective. By taking a proactive approach and thanking those for their contributions, it helps to eliminate uncivil behaviour, develops stronger relationships, and promotes a better working environment which helps to make employees happier, and encouraging them to believe in their own value and capabilities, which will generate more work. These factors not only improve each individual’s well-being, but also helps with staff retention and work performance.
Saying thank you really is a simple task that requires very little effort -there’s no excuse to forget to acknowledge a colleague’s hard work or show your appreciation. Ask yourself when did you last say thank you or praise a job well done, or even received thanks from your boss? It’s a no brainer really, what are you waiting for, just two little words, thank you!
