Next week, school children will be rewarded for what they learned at the annual Child Accident Prevention Jersey’s (CAPJ) Safety in Action event, which took place in July.
Year five classes from every school were invited, amounting to over 1,000 nine and ten year old children taking part in the event, which consisted of six interactive workshops, designed to improve their knowledge regarding their own safety.
Children were asked to complete a quiz in May before the event, to give an indication of their existing safety knowledge. The questions were based on fire safety, First Aid, road safety, water safety, play safety and kitchen safety, all of which were workshops at the event.
In September, children had to complete the quiz again after the event to identify how much they learned when they returned to school after the summer holidays.
Volunteers marked both sets of quizzes and the results are reviewed by CAPJ.
Mandy Le Tensorer, co-ordinator for CAPJ said, ‘I’m really looking forward to visiting schools and giving out certificates to individual children who have scored well in the quiz or who have significantly improved their score. This shows us that they have really listened and learned and taken on board what we have taught them. We also have shields for the school which has the top score or that showed the best improvement in each of the workshops. There are also two trophies, which are awarded to the overall top scoring school and the overall best improving school.’
Martin Preisig, from CAPJ and co-ordinator of Safety In Action said, ‘This is a great event, one which all the children really look forward to attending. They have often heard about it from siblings or older children at school and they are always excited to take part. We are grateful to Marks & Spencer’s which provides water for the children to have in their goody bags as well as information from each of our partner agencies.’
