Sports associations in Jersey are now being invited to apply for funding to help with the cost of travel.
The first round of applications opened on Tuesday (30th January) after nearly 100 sports representatives gathered across two days at St Paul’s Centre to hear more about the new application process.
Jersey Sport has taken over the governance of the Travel Grants scheme, which was previously administered by the Advisory Council for Sport. Up to £125,000 is available in 2018 as part of the States of Jersey’s commitment to developing athletes.
“It was great to see such a variety of sports represented at our workshops this week,” said Jersey Sport CEO Catriona McAllister.
“Off island competition is essential to developing our local sportsmen and women, and we’re expecting a lot of bids.”
A panel, chaired by Jersey Sport director Steve Law, will review the applications using a detailed set of criteria.
“Travel Grants have always been a highly valued contribution to sport in Jersey,” said Mr Law.
“Thanks to the States of Jersey and in particular Constable Steve Pallett, the assistant minister with responsibility for sport, for maintaining them and championing them to date.
“It’s now Jersey Sport’s job to take them forward. This is an opportunity to strengthen the grant process and grow the fund in addition to the essential continuing government support.”
Jersey Sport recently appointed a Sports Partnership Manager, James Tilley, to work closely alongside sports organisations and a key part of his role will be to support clubs and associations with their governance and applications.
