Following a term of training during their Sixth Form Enrichment lessons, Victoria College students have begun delivering Physical Education lessons at 5 local primary schools.

Funded by the Connect Me: Connecting our Communities Grant Scheme, the 5 week-long programme will not only enable 125 primary school pupils per week to access additional PE lessons but will also enable schools to offer a wider variety of activities within lessons – improving engagement and increasing activity levels of pupils. The money from the grant has been used to purchase the relevant equipment needed for these lessons; all equipment will then be donated to the primary schools to keep at the end of the programme.

Victoria College PE teacher, Adam Lester said “PE was arguably the subject which was impacted most during the Covid-19 pandemic because it wasn’t a subject the students could do effectively at home. With the Government’s focus on improving wellbeing through engagement in physical activities, building this support for local schools into our Sixth Form Enrichment programme was an obvious choice.”

Every Monday and Tuesday, the Sixth Formers deliver 40-minute multi-sport sessions in St Luke’s, Springfield, First Tower, Grand Vaux and Janvrin primary schools, focusing on the fundamentals of physical literacy - being able to catch, jump, kick, run, balance and throw – the building blocks for a strong foundation in PE and for longer term physical activity.

Headteacher Dr Hughes said, “Following our recent partnership with Strive Academy to extend Victoria College’s sports provision and increase our options on offer, we are pleased to be able to do the same for the local community. Exercise is a key element in promoting the physical and mental wellbeing of Islanders and we are committed to helping make this as accessible as possible.

We are delighted to have received this Connect Me grant which, in partnership with local schools, is enabling us to support the Government in ‘Inspiring an Active Jersey’. The opportunity to donate the sports equipment at the end of the programme to use for the delivery of lessons across multiple year groups is key to ensuring the continuity of the programme and the longer-term benefits to local primary schools. It is also wonderful for some of our Sixth Formers to share their passion for sports with young people. Our students really enjoy it, too.”

Alongside A Levels, all Victoria College Sixth Form students take part in a programme of Enrichment which is designed to not only develop skills and qualities that enable them to become well rounded young people, but also enhance their future workplace or further education applications.

Charlie Brennan, a participating Sixth Form student said ‘This has been a really empowering experience. Being able to design, develop and deliver such an impactful programme has been so fulfilling and I’ve been able to develop key teamwork and leadership skills along the way that I’ll use long into the future.’
