The Bank has supported the appointment of an outreach employability support worker to work with local young people in developing life and employability skills.
The new role will focus on addressing employability issues by providing a range of employability related interventions with the aim of developing young people’s skills base, raising their aspirations and helping them prepare for employment.
The Support Worker will offer young people the opportunity to develop essential employability skills as well as access to skilled professionals though the involvement of Barclay's volunteers and positive learning experiences using Action for Children’s ‘Skills for Success’ toolkit.
Action for Children is a national charity that supports the most vulnerable children, young people and their families in the UK. The charity’s vision is a world in which every child and young person has the love, support and opportunity they need to reach their potential.
5 Million Young Futures is Barclays’ commitment to invest not only money, but colleagues’ time and expertise in community programmes that enhance the enterprise, employability and financial skills of five million disadvantaged young people, aged 10 to 35, by 2015
Barclays and Action for Children have been working in partnership for more than nine years in the UK to build the financial skills of vulnerable young people, aged 16-25.
Shaun Phillips, Head of Intermediaries and International at Barclays, who was in the island to meet representatives from Action for Children, said: “Barclays support will provide a great boost to Action for Children’s employability projects in Guernsey. Life and employability skills are so important in the modern world – and like Action for Children, Barclays is committed to supporting young people to succeed.”
Steve Gibson, chair of Barclay’s community investment committee in Guernsey, said: “We want to play an active role in addressing the most pressing needs and challenges of the Guernsey community.
“By aligning our community investment strategy to our skills and experience as a bank, the positive impact of our activity is much more than just a financial contribution.”
Kareena Hodgson, children’s services manager at Action for Children on Guernsey, said: “Young people have told us they don’t feel employable, they feel uncertain and lack the confidence needed to succeed in employment.
“Those that Action for Children supports have the additional burden of coping with turbulent, often traumatic lives. For them, the risk of unemployment and the financial, social and emotional problems that often come with it are even greater.
“A huge thank you to Barclays for making it possible for us to reach more vulnerable young people across Guernsey.”
