Money raised from the 2017 Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon will go towards Guernsey Mind’s ‘TeamTalk’ initiative, it is announced today.

‘TeamTalk’ is the charity’s latest drive to promote a better understanding of mental health and wellbeing issues within the local community – and will encourage coaches, managers and players of local sports teams and clubs to be open about, and equipped to deal with, mental health issues.

Andy Finch, head of wealth management at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management in Guernsey, said: “We are proud to sponsor the Guernsey Marathon for the third year – and to also help raise awareness of the positive work that the beneficiary charity, Guernsey Mind, is doing in the local community.

“There is often a stigma around mental health - socially and in the workplace - so it’s great that Mind is launching the ‘Team Talk’ initiative.  Anything that encourages people to talk about mental health more openly can only be a good thing.”

Emily Litten, executive director of Guernsey Mind, said: “Guernsey Mind proactively encourages positive mental wellbeing in the island. The support from the Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon will enable us to continue this work through our ‘TeamTalk’ initiative.

“The benefits of exercise for good mental health are well known and working towards a community event, such as the Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management

Guernsey Marathon, can help to build endurance, give people something to aim towards and to feel proud about. All of these things make us feel good and help us value ourselves and our island.”

Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon event director, Peter Head, said “One in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point and Guernsey Mind does a lot of work to ensure those affected get access to the right support.

“Taking part in sport and exercise is important for a healthy lifestyle and can help improve mental wellbeing, so it is apt that the 2017 Guernsey Marathon will support Guernsey Mind’s ‘Team Talk’ initiative.

“We hope runners taking part in the 2017 Guernsey Marathon, and their friends and families, will support this fantastic initiative through fundraising.”

The 2017 Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon and Relay Races will take place on Sunday 27 August 2017. Entries are now open and competitors can take advantage of a special early bird offer until 31 March.

A Seafront Sunday will be taking place on the day of the marathon where the charity will also be raising funds. There will be activities and entertainment on offer throughout the day including charity stalls, food and music.

Competitors can get more information and secure their place at the starting line by registering online at www.guernseymarathon.gg
