It’s been at the epicentre of Guernsey culture and entertainment for many generations but Candie Gardens will officially become a ‘Fun Palace’ for the weekend of 1st and 2nd October.

The Gardens have been registered on the ‘Fun Palace’ map by their hosts, Guernsey Museums, with the aim to celebrate creativity and foster a sense of community. There are hundreds of Palaces being organised all over the UK and further afield.

The Gardens will be populated with storytellers, theatre performances, live music and fun activities for the weekend. In tune with the Fun Palace ethos, all events in the Gardens will be free of charge (normal admission applies to the Museum). The events will take place between 11am and 3pm each day.

Visitors on the Saturday can meet staff from the Guilles Allès Library, who are also hosting the only other Fun Palace in Guernsey. Staff from the library will be hosting storytelling and reading aloud sessions in the Lower Gardens next to the Ginko tree on the Saturday, 11am – 3pm. There will also be a chance for younger visitors and families to take part in their unique Candie Gardens Treasure Hunt.

Marcel Lenormand from Maker Space will be hosting fun science activities during the weekend, where visitors can get hands on with some extremely geeky and fun equipment. There will also be a ‘Victorian Toy Maker’ in the Gardens on both days, who will show off some toys from the Museum’s collection. There will be more recent games on display to play with, such as Magic Robot, Ker-Plunk and Etch-a-Sketch.

There will also be live music and Living History presentations too. Multi-instrumentalist James Dumbelton will be performing on the terrace on Saturday, followed by Greg Harrison at another point during the weekend. On Sunday, Bob Thompson will be telling the story of Toilers of the Sea in perfect position aside the statue of Victor Hugo.
