Channel Islands Co-operative Society passes savings onto motorists

Co-op customers will only pay a penny more for fuel from next week despite the States increasing duty by 3p per litre.

The Channel Island Co-operative Society’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jim Plumley, confirmed that the society would pass on savings resulting from a fall in the price of crude oil.

"The States of Guernsey has confirmed that there will be a 3p per litre increase in duty levied on fuel. However, due to the decreasing wholesale cost of fuel, we will be passing this saving onto customers, thus reducing the increase to 1p per litre from this week as opposed to the 3p per litre expected by islanders," he said.

"We are able to make this saving for our customers as the average cost of fuel has been decreasing over the last couple of weeks, with a further sharp decrease seen last week. We monitor fuel prices on a daily basis and wherever there are potential savings for our customers we always pass these on. Fuel in Jersey, which is not currently subject to a duty rise, will decrease by 1p per litre from this week."

Commenting on whether the increase would have any impact on drivers’ habits, Mr Plumley said it was too soon to say.
