Guernsey sixth form students looking to study economics, business studies or law at university have until 21 March to apply for a bursary from the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities (CICRA). CICRA awards a bursary to a student in each island with the aim of supporting home-grown talent and further developing skills in the field of economic regulation and competition law in the islands.

The bursary is a grant worth £1,500 per annum towards the cost of studying for a  relevant degree as well as a minimum of eight weeks paid work experience each year for the duration of the degree.

There is also the possibility of a full time job with CICRA after graduation.

CICRA’s primary role is to promote consumer welfare through competition and measures which encourage appropriate pricing, greater choice and innovation in the goods and services available to islanders. It enforces competition legislation and regulates the telecoms and postal sectors in both islands and in addition the electricity sector in Guernsey.

Andrew Riseley, CICRA chief executive, said: “The aim of our bursary scheme is to nurture local talent and to develop a pool of relevant expertise within the Channel Islands.

“Following the success of our previous students and with the increasing costs of University education, we are pleased to be able to offer this bursary to the successful candidate. It provides an excellent opportunity for to gain valuable work experience through exposure to all areas of CICRA’s work and to apply the knowledge they gain at university in a unique workplace setting.”

Applications for the 2014/2015 and beyond should be submitted by post or email to Lisa White, lisa.white@cicra.gg by 21 March 2014 and include a CV and covering letter outlining why the applicants should be awarded the bursary. CICRA will prepare a shortlist and interview successful applicants by 28 March. The final decision is expected to be made by 11 April 2014.
