Following 170 applications being made for the 2014 training programme, 22 young islanders have joined accountants Deloitte’s Jersey and Guernsey offices.

The Jersey office has taken on 14 trainees with eight in Guernsey. The young people are a mix of university graduates, A-level and scholar students who all had to complete a rigorous selection procedure.

They have widely varied educational backgrounds, with degrees in accounting and finance, economics and languages, sport, physiology and biochemistry, which reflect the diverse nature of Deloitte’s sectors, their clients’ interests and the firm’s passion for bringing broad thinking and insights to their clients.

The 2014 trainee intake has settled into the routine of work and study and they have already started their professional education training and taken the first exams of Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants courses. They have also undertaken extensive in-house training and the next years will see them take on more responsibility throughout the audit.

“As a training organisation, Deloitte provides exceptional opportunities for young people and this year’s group of new joiners have proved they are all bright and talented individuals. We are all looking forward to following their progress over the next three years,’ says John Clacy, HR head for the Channel Islands.

Deloitte caters for all levels by offering positions at graduate level, A-level and scholar - it all depends on what stage the applicant wants to start their career. On the scholar scheme, students will work at the firm for seven months as part of their gap year plans before heading to university next autumn.
