Local charity Young People Guernsey (‘YPG’) has received a £5,000 donation from Deutsche Bank to help with the running of the St Peter Port-based centre ‘The HUB’ it operates in partnership with Barnardo’s.

Since opening in September 2012, The HUB has provided an island-wide advice, information and listening support service for all young people aged 11-16, with a team consisting of two full-time and one part-time member of staff and more than 15 volunteers.  The donation from Deutsche Bank will help YPG with the significant ongoing costs of running The HUB.

Providing a neutral, independent, professional advice centre, The HUB offers young people access to free and confidential support for all kinds of issues such as bullying, relationship and family problems, education and careers, substance abuse, sexuality and sexual health issues, homelessness, mental health, sexual, physical and psychological abuse.

As well as offering drop-in sessions, The HUB team also join with other agencies as part of an outreach programme and has a presence in all nine secondary schools across Guernsey, running a range of initiatives including leading assemblies on specific issues, holding outreach sessions for emotional support and organising peer mentoring training.

Jane St Pier, Chair and Director of YPG, commented:

“As it receives no States funding, The HUB relies on sponsorships and donations such as this one so we are thankful to Deutsche Bank for their kind contribution, which will enable us to maintain the momentum we have gained since launching in 2012. Over   700 young people have accessed the service in the first 17 months – both by visiting The HUB and via the outreach work of The HUB team - which just goes to show how important it is to provide this service in Guernsey.  I’d like to thank the volunteers and other agencies we work alongside to ensure a seamless support service is available to all who need it.”

Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer from Deutsche Bank, said:

“Partnering with organisations that support young people has long been a focus for Deutsche Bank in Guernsey, and I am delighted that we are able to provide financial assistance to such a worthwhile cause. The work undertaken by the staff and volunteers at The HUB is considerable and makes a real difference to the lives of so many young people in the island. I hope this donation helps YPG to continue its outstanding work through The HUB and achieve its expanded objectives for the year ahead.”
