Hundredss of children from Baubigny Schools will be walking the west coast to raise money for two school initiatives.
The sixth West Coast Challenge, which takes place on 3rd July, is an annual 11 mile walk from Pleinmont to Pembroke and aims to raise money to benefit St Sampson’s High and Le Murier. For the second year running, Rossborough Insurance has agreed to sponsor the walk to ensure more money can be raised.
Money from this year’s walk will be used to expand the school’s Accelerated Reader programme and fund a new online homework scheme.
"Each year we identify projects that bring enormous benefits to the students but that our allocated budget can’t cover. The West Coast Challenge was introduced as a way of bringing the school together for a fun day out but also allows us to raise much needed funds to benefit the school. The support of Rossborough, the main sponsor, and other companies who are providing us with refreshments means all of our costs are covered," said St Sampson’s High assistant head Liz Dale.
Accelerated Reader is a recognised reading scheme which divides the books in the library into zones and includes online quizzes for youngsters to complete once they have finished a book before directing them to other suitable books.
"Thanks to the money raised over the last two years, the library is now stocked up with books suitable for our Year 7s and Year 8s. We now need them for the Year 9s. When we were inspected recently, our Accelerated Reader programme was highlighted as one of the school’s strengths and so we want to ensure that we can continue offering it as the children progress through the school," said Miss Dale.
The rest of the money raised will be used towards the subscription costs for Show My Homework, an online homework planner which has recently been introduced.
