Trekking the coast of Guernsey to find answers about Guernsey’s history was the secret to success for the winner of the Island Explorers Treasure Hunt.
The winner of the Guernsey Museums competition has been announced as 9 year old Rebecca Bradshaw. She claimed her Heritage Goody Bag (from Access & Learning Manager Jo Dowding, see picture), which included binoculars, a compass, books, stationery and Guernsey sweets.
The St Mary & St Michael pupil correctly answered 12 questions about a dozen different historic sites in Guernsey. Questions included ‘how high is Victoria Tower?’ and ‘what initials can be seen on the 3 cannon at Fort Pezeries?’
The aim of the quiz, held as part of the Channel Islands Heritage Festival, was to encourage families to visit the historic sites and enjoy discovering the answers together. At least 500 Treasure Hunts were given out at HistoryFest, along with a free pencil, badge and balloon. It was also available to download from the Museum website. About one hundred forms were returned to Candie, where entrants could claim their Island Explorer medal. Although originally aimed at families with children under 12 years, the quiz attracted participants of all ages.
Jo Dowding of Guernsey Museums: ‘it’s been fantastic to see teenagers and adults enter – I think the oldest person was 70 years old. The winner has been announced but entrants with completed forms are still welcome to bring them back to Candie and claim their medal’.

It was a fantastic way of exploring the island’s unique and varied heritage in a fun and engaging way’.
Children with completed forms are still welcome to collect their Island Explorers medal from Candie front desk – the Museum is open 10.00am – 5.00pm every day. Guernsey Museums plan to run a similar Treasure Hunt next spring.
