Nearly 300 people went on the run at Guernsey Airport for the second Crimestoppers Runway Run on Saturday night (17 September).

This year runners took off for the 5k (3.1 miles) race from the Channel Islands Air Search (CIAS) hangar. The course took the participants along the length of the runway guided by the landing lights and a full moon.

Dan Galpin was first to cross the finish line to steal the prize for fastest male in 16 minutes 33 seconds. The first female to fly in was Laura McCarthy in a time of 18 minutes 47 seconds.

Sean Galpin and Jean Goracy took the titles for first male and female veteran runners and Joe Yeaman was the first runner under the age of 18.

Collenette Jones was the first team to land back at the hangar to take home the trophy for fastest corporate team on the runway, just beating 2015 winner Aztec.

Mike Smith from Guernsey Crimestoppers said: “It was great to see such a fantastic turnout for the second Crimestoppers Runway Run.

“We wanted to go bigger and better this year with more runners taking part and with a new route finishing at the CIAS hangar all adding to the surreal experience of the event.

“The Runway Run is a unique event for the community which helps to raise the profile of Crimestoppers’ role in keeping our islands safe. This year, the event also supported the CIAS which does such fantastic work providing an airborne search and rescue service in the islands. The race date coincided with the 20th anniversary of when the CIAS hangar was opened.

“Many thanks go to Guernsey Airport, all the runners, local businesses and over 30 volunteers who, together, under-pinned this year’s Runway Run. Not only did the entrants run well but they were generous in raising £800 for CIAS.”

The event was organised by Crimestoppers Guernsey and sponsored by Natwest, Creaseys and Grant Thornton.
