Guernsey and Jersey Gas have taken on their first apprentices for three years, including the company’s first ever female apprentice.
“Following the company’s restructure, we are now looking to the future and need to ensure that we have the right people who are qualified and experienced and can deliver the service that our customers expect,” said commercial director John Davies.
“We had more than 50 applications across the three islands which we believe reflects our commitment to our very loyal workforce. People recognise that they can have a long, interesting and challenging career and we are delighted that so many people wanted to join us.”
All of the applicants went through an assessment programme that included informal and formal interviews, work-related testing and on-site assessment. In Guernsey, the successful candidates were Kieran Mayley and Charli Russell..
“All of our new apprentices stood out from the start and I am confident that they will each become an integral part of the company’s future. It is particularly pleasing for me, having taken on the first ever female apprentice in the UK, that I am now able to say I have also employed the first female gas apprentice in the Channel Islands.”
Miss Russell joins the service team in Guernsey having left school in 2007 and worked in retail, finance and catering. She joins Guernsey Gas from a panel beaters, where she has been working as a car sprayer. Mr Mayley left school in 2012 and has been working as a shop assistant in a sports shop.
“We have appointed Vernon Hill as our technical training officer and it will be his responsibility to support our four Channel Islands’ apprentices and the two recently appointed in the Isle of Man through their professional and work-based training and ensure that they become valued members of the teams,” said Mr Davies.
