The Friends of Les Bourgs Hospice has a new chair following the retirement of Jack Honeybill after 23 years.

Liz de Carteret, who has been the charity’s vice chair, said she plans to continue the great work which Mr Honeybill had overseen.

‘Jack and the committee have worked tirelessly raising £4.5 million since 1993, which is a considerable achievement. Each year, the Friends raise approximately a quarter of the £1m running costs of the hospice, allowing the team there the time to focus on caring for islanders and supporting their loved ones when they need it the most,’ said Mrs de Carteret.

‘I’m thrilled to be taking over as chair and continuing my involvement with a much loved charity. It’s an honour for me to be surrounded by committee members and volunteers who are so passionate about the cause and willing to do all they can to help others.’

Mrs de Carteret joined the committee in 2009 after the company she was working for at the time decided on Les Bourgs Hospice as one of its chosen charities.

‘I really enjoyed my time working with the committee and they later asked if I wanted to join in a personal capacity, which I was really pleased to do. Being involved is my way of giving something back to the island,’ she said.

She said she already had some ideas of what else the Friends could do but was keen to hear from islanders.

‘I want to continue to improve how we communicate and engage with everyone who supports us from the Friends supporters and volunteers through to the corporate sponsors. We also need to move with the times and be more active online,’ she said.

‘We’ll continue to run the successful events but I want to add some more so if anyone has any ideas then I’d encourage them to get in touch.’

Prized at £5 a month, the lottery offers a prize fund of £4,000 including two top prizes of £1,000.  Forms can be downloaded from the hospice website www.lesbourgshospice.org.gg
