Permission has been granted for the redevelopment of the Homemaker site, which will see the current building replaced by 28,000 sq.ft of modern retail space.
The plans, which are part of the wider vision for the regeneration of Leale’s Yard, include the demolition of the Homemaker store on Lowlands Industrial Estate and the building of two 14,000 sq.ft modern units.
‘This is an important enabler for the overall Leale’s Yard regeneration and we are delighted to have moved a step closer,’ said chief executive Colin Macleod.
‘Our vision for a vibrant and thriving community, which combines historical important with modern day living and retail, has been well received and we know people are excited that this long-awaited development is becoming a reality.’
The Society will now progress with a detailed building control application for the Homemaker site and expect to submit this within three months.
‘Whilst that application is going through the necessary process, we will be creating a new concept store on the Bridge so that we can relocate the Homemaker store and its team, in the first quarter of 2017. Work will begin on the new store once the current tenant’s lease comes to an end on 31st October,’ said Mr Macleod.
‘It will be totally renovated and modernised to deliver a contemporary home store which will offer islanders a fantastic choice of products.’
Mr Macleod added that they will also begin talking to potential tenants for the new retail units.
‘We want to create a mini retail park which will complement St Peter Port, rather than compete with it. The floor plates will be very different to what can be found in Town and so will appeal to different businesses. Each of the units has the flexibility of being sub-divided and we expect interest in them to be high, particularly from brands that are not currently here already.’
The planning application for the redevelopment of Leale’s Yard, which includes 410 residential units, 476 parking spaces and new commercial units, is still being considered.
‘It’s an exciting time for the Bridge and we are delighted that progress on our plans, which will bring tangible benefits to existing and future residents and businesses, is being made,’ said Mr Macleod.
